Card vs Interac e-Transfer: Paying for an Online Tobacco Order

Quick answer: We accept two payment methods: Interac e-Transfer and credit card. Both reach the same checkout, both pay the same prices, and both lead to dispatch within 24 to 48 hours of confirmed payment. The practical difference is what happens at the moment you pay. A card confirms instantly at checkout but is sometimes declined by banks that flag online tobacco transactions. Our e-Transfer is set up with Autodeposit, so it confirms automatically once your bank sends it, with no manual matching and no security question.

Most payment questions we get come down to the same three things: which method is faster, how the e-Transfer actually works, and why a perfectly good card sometimes gets declined. This post answers all three, then puts the two methods side by side so you can pick whichever suits you. If you just want the button-by-button walkthrough of sending an e-Transfer, that lives in our separate guide to paying by Interac e-Transfer. This post is the comparison.

Which payment method is faster?

Card is faster at the exact moment of checkout, and e-Transfer is usually only minutes behind, so in practice both methods put your order into the same 24 to 48 hour dispatch window. Speed is not a strong reason to pick one over the other.

Here is why the gap is so small. A card payment is approved or declined while you are still on the checkout page: if it goes through, your order is confirmed on the spot. An e-Transfer adds one step, because you place the order first and then send the transfer from your own online banking. With many Canadian banks that transfer arrives quickly, though exact timing is handled by your bank, not by us. Because our e-Transfer is set up with Autodeposit, the payment is accepted the moment it arrives. There is no security question to answer, and nobody on our side has to manually match your transfer to your order before it counts as paid.

The one scenario where speed genuinely differs is a card decline. A declined card can turn a two minute checkout into an afternoon of calling your bank. If your card has been declined on a tobacco purchase before, starting with e-Transfer is usually the faster path overall, because it does not depend on how your bank treats the transaction.

How do I pay using Interac e-Transfer?

You place the order first, then send the transfer from your own online banking, and Autodeposit does the rest. The flow looks like this:

  1. Build your cart and check out. Remember the minimum of 2 non-Crush items to reach checkout. Select Interac e-Transfer as the payment method.
  2. Note the payment details. After you place the order, you receive the recipient details and your order total.
  3. Open your own online banking or banking app. Start a new Interac e-Transfer to the recipient details provided, for the exact order total. The screens vary from bank to bank, but every major Canadian bank offers e-Transfer inside its regular online banking.
  4. Send it. Because we use Autodeposit, the transfer deposits automatically. You will not be asked to set a security question, and there is no waiting for someone to accept the money.
  5. Done. Once the payment is received, your order joins the dispatch queue. Orders are dispatched within 24 to 48 hours of confirmed payment, Canada-wide, in discreet packaging.

Two details worth knowing. First, send the exact total, because a transfer for the wrong amount is the most common thing that slows an e-Transfer order down. Second, e-Transfer means you never type a card number on our site at all: the payment happens entirely inside your own banking, which is exactly why some buyers prefer it for tobacco orders regardless of whether their card works.

Why did my card get declined?

The most common reason is that your bank, not our checkout, blocked the transaction. Card networks label every merchant with a category, and some banks apply extra scrutiny or outright blocks to certain categories of online purchase, tobacco among them. How aggressively that happens varies by bank and by card, which is why the same card can work for one person and decline for another on an identical order.

Beyond category screening, the usual decline causes are the boring ones that apply to any online purchase:

  • Fraud filters. A first purchase at a merchant your bank has not seen you use before can trip an automatic hold, especially on a larger total. Banks generally lift these once you confirm the purchase is really you.
  • Limits. Daily spending limits or per-transaction caps matter more here than at a corner store, because carton orders are bigger numbers. A 21 carton order at $40 is $840, and a case order of 50 cartons is $1,500, which is past some default card limits.
  • Billing address mismatch. If the billing address you type does not match what your card issuer has on file, the payment can fail even though the card is fine.
  • Prepaid and some virtual cards. These are declined by some processors more often than regular credit cards, and the behaviour varies by card.

A decline does not mean anything is wrong with your order, and it does not need to end the purchase. You have three practical fixes: try the card again after confirming the purchase with your bank, use a different card, or switch to e-Transfer, which bypasses card screening entirely because it is a bank transfer you send yourself. Most people whose card declines simply pay by e-Transfer and are done five minutes later.

Card vs e-Transfer side by side

The honest summary is that these two methods differ at the moment of payment and almost nowhere else.

Where you pay On the checkout page From your own online banking, after placing the order
Confirmation Instant at checkout, if approved Automatic on arrival, via Autodeposit
Typical extra time None Minutes, depending on your bank

Price, shipping, dispatch Identical Identical

Does the payment method change what you pay?

No. There is no surcharge and no discount for either method, so the numbers below hold whichever way you pay. Prices are $45 per carton for 1 to 20 cartons, $40 for 21 to 49, and $30 at 50 or more (1 case). Crush flavoured cartons are $65 at any quantity. Shipping is a flat $25 anywhere in Canada, and orders of $450 or more, which is 10 cartons at the base price, ship free.

Sample order Carton price Product total Shipping Order total, card or e-Transfer
2 cartons $45 $90 $25 $115
10 cartons $45 $450 Free $450
21 cartons $40 $840 Free $840
50 cartons (1 case) $30 $1,500 Free $1,500

Which should you choose?

If your card works, card is the simplest path: one page, instant confirmation, nothing else to do. There is no reason to avoid it.

Choose e-Transfer if any of these apply: your card has been declined on a tobacco purchase before, your order total is large enough to bump into card limits, or you would simply rather not enter a card number for this kind of purchase. e-Transfer is also the method that never depends on how a particular bank treats a tobacco merchant, which makes it the more predictable of the two for repeat orders.

Plenty of our regulars use both: card for small top-up orders, e-Transfer for the 21-plus and case orders where the totals get bigger. Since price, shipping and dispatch are identical, there is no wrong answer, only the method that fails less often for you.

Frequently asked questions

What payment methods does Absolute Smokes accept?

Two: Interac e-Transfer and credit card. There is no cash on delivery and no cheque option. Both methods pay the same prices and lead to the same dispatch times.

Which payment method is faster?

Card confirms instantly at checkout when it is approved. e-Transfer usually follows within minutes because Autodeposit accepts the transfer automatically. Both put orders into the same 24 to 48 hour dispatch window.

How do I pay using Interac e-Transfer?

Place your order, choose e-Transfer at checkout, then send a transfer for the exact total from your own online banking to the recipient details provided. Autodeposit accepts it automatically and the order moves to dispatch.

What is Autodeposit?

Autodeposit is an Interac feature that deposits an incoming transfer automatically, with no security question and no manual acceptance. Our store uses it, which is why e-Transfer payments confirm without any waiting on our side.

Why did my card get declined?

Banks sometimes apply extra screening to online tobacco transactions, and ordinary causes like fraud filters, spending limits, prepaid cards, or a billing address mismatch also apply. Confirm the purchase with your bank, try another card, or pay by e-Transfer instead.

Does paying by e-Transfer cost more?

No. Prices are identical either way: $45 per carton for 1 to 20 cartons, $40 for 21 to 49, $30 at 50 or more, and $65 for Crush flavoured cartons. Shipping is the same flat $25, free at $450 or more.

Do you accept cash on delivery or cheques?

No. Payment is completed before dispatch, by Interac e-Transfer or credit card only.

Can I split an order between card and e-Transfer?

No. Each order is paid with a single method, chosen at checkout. If you want to use both methods, place two separate orders, keeping in mind the minimum of 2 non-Crush items per order.

When does my order ship after I pay?

Orders are dispatched within 24 to 48 hours of confirmed payment, Canada-wide, in discreet packaging. Transit time after dispatch depends on the carrier and your location.

What happens if I send an e-Transfer for the wrong amount?

Contact us with your order number. A transfer for the wrong amount is the most common e-Transfer delay, and it is sorted out manually rather than automatically, so the sooner you write, the sooner the order moves.

Is there a minimum order?

Yes. You need at least 2 non-Crush items in the cart to reach checkout, and you can mix and match products to get there. Crush products are exempt from the minimum.
